VACCINATIONS FOR DOGS
All dogs that have never been vaccinated or have not had a vaccination in more than 18 months need a course of 2 injections, with 2 (max 6) weeks apart, to give them at least 12 months immunity against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis. They will then need one yearly “Booster” to keep up this immunity. (We will send you a reminder of when this is due). This practice will only give your dog the vaccination needed, so will use an alternating scheme of Full Boosters (against Distemper,Hepatitis, Parvo, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis) and Small Boosters (against Parvo, Parainfuenza and Lepto) as Distemper and Hepatitis vaccinations will last for at least 2 years.
We recommend to wait till your puppy is at least 9w old to start the vaccination course and routinely will inject puppies at 9 and 11w. Your puppy then won’t be safe to mix with other dogs or go out till 12w of age ! We will give your puppy a free wormer at the start of the course.
All dogs need to be fully vaccinated (= no more than 1 year since last injection), as boarding kennels will check the vaccination record before kennelling them. If your animal hasn’t had a vaccination (for more than a year) you will need to bring him at least 3w before kennelling. Most boarding kennels will recommend / insist on also vaccinating against Kennel Cough ( Infectious Tracheobronchitis or Bordetella), as this is a highly infectious respiratory disease, that can linger in kennels for months. This intranasal vaccine needs to be given preferably at least 5 days before going into kennels, but only gives short protection of 3- 6 months (depending on brand used). It can be given at the same time of normal vaccinations.
Rabies vaccination is only required for export to some countries and for getting a Pet’s Passport if you travel to countries that are covered under the Pet Travel Scheme. See www.defra.gov.uk for more info. We do need to order this vaccine in, so please give us a few days notice. |
